About the Artist

Geneviève Lacerte is an emerging artist who uniquely interprets the wild brilliance of West Coast scenes through her vibrant colour palette and expressive brushwork.

Upbringing

Aloft in the South Pacific, 1980's

A Canadian artist born in Québec, Geneviève's family moved to British Columbia when she was very young. She spent her early childhood living on a minesweeper, and the rest of her youth working and sailing on tall ships built by her father. She travelled extensively, and ultimately survived a sinking at sea.

Her early explorations of the coastal wilderness of Canada, and remote tropical islands abroad, have given her a rich palette from which to draw inspiration for her paintings, sculpture, pottery, music, and writing.

Artistic Background

As a child Geneviève was noticed for her artistic abilities as early as primary school, with teachers assuming Geneviève's mother was the one who painted works that Geneviève had done on her own. At 13, Geneviève received sculpture lessons from Peggy Walton Packard and marveled at how Peggy had made a life for herself through art and teaching. Geneviève went on to study a variety of art forms in the Visual Arts Program at Camosun College, finding joy in every medium from pottery to photography and animation. A subsequent program at Thompson River University in Digital Art and Design started her working in computer graphics and landed her a job working as a graphic designer in a small company, then as a digital artist with Sanctuary Woods Multimedia. From there her career shifted into technology, the Federal Government, eCommerce, and teaching business students up to the graduate level.

In 2006 Geneviève joined the Studio30 Art Group in an attempt to bring art back into her life. She sold all but one of her paintings in her first show with the group, and began taking private commissions for her artwork.

"So often, life interrupts art. Finding a way back to it is like finding a way back to sight."
